Bryan has been practicing painting since the
early 1980s. He created the transparent
painting technique in 1986 when he was still
in university. Bryan applied oil thinner
directly on the canvas to make a coating
that had a translucent effect. Now, he uses
not just oil thinner on oil paints and water
on acrylic paints; he uses air on all kinds
of mediums. A 3-dimensional effect is
typically produced with the transparent
painting technique.
In his view, fine art has two levels of
expression, one is real, and the other is
philosophic. While the former is a more
expressive style, the latter has a larger
imagination space. Although photography can
best express the reality of things, abstract
painting can express concepts and ideas the
best. This is why he chose the latter.
